Error importing certificate to Exchange 2010

Hi,

Recently I have been deploying Exchange 2010 into an environment at work and have hit upon an issue with importing certificates.

I created the certificate request using the normal New-ExchangeCertificate command.

Then I sent the request file to Digicert who returned me a certificate.

At this point I tried to import it using Import-Exchange certificate.

Well this is where the fun started!

I got this error:

The source data is corrupted or not properly Base64 encoded.

    + CategoryInfo          : ReadError: (:) [Import-ExchangeCertificate], InvalidOperationException

    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : 773ECDDB,Microsoft.Exchange.Management.SystemConfigurationTasks.ImportExchangeCertificate

So I started digging and opened a PSS call and discovered that Exchange wasn’t handling the header and footer in the certificate correctly.

When I opened the cert with Notepad and removed the -----BEGIN PKCS7----- and -----END PKCS7----- lines everything worked fine!

Cheers

Nathan

Follow up from Irish event

Hi,

As some will know I spoke in Dublin, Ireland on the 12th June.

Firstly for anyone wanting the slides, I have uploaded them here:

http://www.slideshare.net/nathanwinters/introduction-to-exchange-2010

Also during the discussions about the new storage possibilities of Exchange 2010 I talked about a whitepaper touching on some of the decisions which went into Microsoft creating the storage replication technology. Here is a link:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/cc500980.aspx

Finally, there were a couple of questions I couldn’t answer satisfactorily.

They were as follows:

Q: What backup and restore methods do Microsoft provide for BPOS and how long does MS retain backups for hosted services?

“Backup and Restore Data (for BPOS)”:

http://www.microsoft.com/online/help/en-us/bpos/index.html?page=html%2F7b8f6b68-625d-4f45-98d8-b178c1f3f27d.htm

For Office Outlook Data Recovery:

For corrupted items, “Microsoft Online Services will attempt to recover items up to 14 days old. The service may take one business day to be completed. The newest recovered item may be at least one business day old. There may be some data loss.”

When a mailbox is deleted by mistake, “Microsoft Online Services will attempt to recover a mailbox up to 30 days after deletion. The service may take one business day to be completed. The newest recovered mailbox may be at least one business day old.”

Depending on the nature of the deletion, I think this means the items can be recovered up to 30 days later.

Snapshots of Exchange mailbox data are taken every 2 hours. Snapshots of SharePoint content are taken every 6 hours. These backups are automatically replicated to the secondary datacenter every 6 hours, over the network (tapes are not used at any point in the process).

Q: What is the official status on Hyper-V virtualization of E2010?

A: Exchange 2010 will have the same virtualization support as Exchange 2007, which means that all the roles except Unified Messaging are supported on VM platforms on the Microsoft SVVP program.

Hope that helps

Cheers

Nathan

Exchange 2007 DSN Messages come from wierd address after SP1 RU7

I recently got the following question:

Hello Nathan,

I read your helpful article regarding the customizing of DSN and Quota messages in Exchange 2007. I am wondering if it is possible to modify the email address which these messages are sent from as currently the displayed address on our system is: MicrosoftExchange329e71ec88ae4615bbc36ab6ce41109e@loomisgroup.com?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well I would love to say I figured this out, but I can’t!

Take a look here:

http://www.telnetport25.com/component/content/article/1-exchange-2007-gen/280-exchange-2007-sp-1-roll-up-7-delivery-status-notifications.html

I believe this covers it!

Configuring Exchange 2010 Certificates

Hi,

So having installed Exchange 2010 the next step is to make it useable. The first thing to do is to create a couple of users and mailboxes which frankly hasn’t changed much since Exchange 2007 so I won’t detail it here.

Having done that we need to access those mailboxes, and in order to make use of all the new features the only way to do this right now is via OWA.

Although Exchange 2010 comes enabled with self signed certificates clearly this is not any use if you want to customize the URLs and get rid of irritating warnings that the certificate authority is not trusted so this article will detail how to configure certificates in Exchange 2010.

The first thing to note is that Exchange 2010 has some exciting new functionality compared to Exchange 2007.

In Exchange 2007 all certificate work had to be carried out from the command line. Now we have a GUI!

The New Exchange Certificate wizard can be launched after highlighting the server object in the Exchange Management Console shown below.

image

On the first page give the certificate a name to identify it and click Next

image

The next page is the really clever bit! Here you run through a series of options about elements of Exchange 2010 which can use certificates and generally are prompted with some useful default settings.

image

The following screens show the setting I chose. I didn’t setup federation;

image

I setup OWA to be accessed by mail.gaots.co.uk both internally and from the internet

image

I setup ActiveSync to use mail.gaots.co.uk

image

I setup the web services to use mail.gaots.co.uk and to use the default autodiscover URL

image

I didn’t provision IMAP or POP

image

I setup UM to use a public cert

image

I enabled TLS and opted for the default smtp.gaots.co.uk for the connector FQDN

image

Finally I clicked Next to move on!

On the certificate organisation and location info page I filled in the usual info as below and clicked Next

image

At this point a summary is shown and I clicked New to progress with the creation

image

At this point the request file is created and then you are prompted with a summary page showing the PowerShell command and also, brilliantly, more information about the fact the a Unified Communications certificate is required (i.e. one that can support Subject Alternative Names).

image

Having created the certificate request the next step is to send the request to a certificate authority. Obviously you would most likely do this online with a company like Digicert, however in my case I did it from a CA installed on my domain controller.

Having received the certificate it is time to proceed in getting it installed and activated. This process is started by highlighting the certificate request in the lower pane and clicking the Complete Pending Request link in the action pane.

image

On the Complete Pending Request wizard first page, locate the certificate file received from the CA.

The file should be a .cer file and once located, click Next

(note I tried this with a p7b certificate chain file and it caused a system error!)

image

At this point the certificate is imported and you can click Finish

image

Having imported the cert the final step is to enable the certificate for the relevant services.

This is done by again highlighting the cert in the lower pane and then clicking the Assign Services to Certificate link in the action pane.

image

Next enable the certificate for all relevant services and click Assign. Interestingly UM is greyed out, which is something I will investigate at another time.

image

When applying the cert you may be prompted to replace the existing SMTP certificate in which case you should accept!

Finally click Finish

image

Having completed the above you can see the certificate and the services it is assigned to in the bottom pane!

image

All that remains is to test access to OWA to make sure everything is working!

Installing Exchange 2010 Beta 1 Part 2

In this second part of my mini series on installing Exchange 2010 we will actually get started on installing Exchange. Obviously to install this you will need the bits. For that, take a look at the MSFT site in the next few hours. I will blog the link when I get a minute.

On the server on which you installed all the Prerequisites, download the beta and extract it. Then run Setup.exe.

You will be presented with the screen below:

image

You will notice (if you have followed my previous article correctly that the prerequisites are installed so to move forward, click on Step 4: Install Microsoft Exchange

On the introduction page click Next

image

Click Next to continue setup in English

image

And again click Next

image

Now the main setup starts as we are used to from Exchange 2007 days.

Accept the license agreement and click Next

image

Join the feedback program and click Next

image

In this case we want to install all internal roles (CAS, HUB, Mailbox, and UM) so we will select a Custom install and click Next

image

Select all the roles and click Next

image

Give the Exchange organization a name (in my case Gaots) and click Next

image

Next you are prompted about whether you want to create a public folder database. I decided to do this to allow testing with public folders so selected Yes and then clicked Next

image

Join the Customer Experience Improvement Program and select your org type, and then click Next

image

Exchange will then run through the readiness checks

image

Once it completes click Install to proceed to the install

image

The install will proceed as below

image

As you will see, on my test VMs the install took just under 30 minutes. Once the install completes click Finish

image

At this point you are dropped into the Exchange Management Console and can begin the configuration of your Exchange organization.

I will continue to talk about the configuration steps to get you operational in future posts.

Cheers

Installing Exchange 2010 Beta 1 Part 1

Hi,

I have been playing with various version of Exchange 2010 for a long time now, but of course due to NDA it hasn’t been possible to share anything.

Well finally with the release of the first beta, I can talk :)

So in this first blog post about Exchange 2010 I thought I would outline the prerequisites needed to install the most basic of setups, all the internal roles (CAS, HUB, Mailbox, UM) on a single member server in a single domain forest running Windows Server 2008.

To enable the extension of the Active Directory schema, you will need the AD management tools on the server which the schema is extended from. In our case we will just be using the one server.

The AD MGMT tools (ADDS) can be installed as below:

ServerManagerCmd –i RSAT-ADDS

That done install the relevant prerequisite software

  • Install the .Net Framework 3.5

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=333325FD-AE52-4E35-B531-508D977D32A6&displaylang=en

  • Install the WinRM 2.0 CTP3

To get access to the WinRM 2.0 CTP3 you will need to sign up for a Connect account and then access the link below:

https://connect.microsoft.com/WSMAN

  • Next get the PowerShell V2 CTP3

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c913aeab-d7b4-4bb1-a958-ee6d7fe307bc&displaylang=en#filelist

  • Install an update for MMC

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=1A267131-0362-468C-AB62-28E8EB4ECAAD&displaylang=en

  • Install extensions for ASP.NET AJX 1.0

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ca9d90fa-e8c9-42e3-aa19-08e2c027f5d6&displaylang=en

  • Install the Office System Converter

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=60c92a37-719c-4077-b5c6-cac34f4227cc&displaylang=en

  • For the Hub Transport and UM Roles install the update described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 950888

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=6ab4c1d5-23bc-4d4a-a5c7-3845894cdd0f&DisplayLang=en

  • For the Client Access Role install the update described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 958178

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=6ab4c1d5-23bc-4d4a-a5c7-3845894cdd0f&DisplayLang=en

Having installed all these software prerequisites we move back to installing the Windows Server pieces;

ServerManagerCmd -i Web-Server Web-ISAPI-Ext Web-Metabase Web-Lgcy-Mgmt-Console Web-Basic-Auth Web-Digest-Auth Web-Windows-Auth Web-Net-Ext Web-Dyn-Compression NET-HTTP-Activation RPC-over-HTTP-proxy

Specifically for clusters (which I intend to make this by installing all roles on 2 similar boxes)

ServerManagerCmd -i Failover-Clustering

Specifically for UM

ServerManagerCmd -i Desktop-Experience

So that done, you should be ready to install Exchange 2010!

Finally I thought that the following table might be really useful as a simple way to see what is needed for each role:

Configuring OCS SIP Trunking with Gradwell

Hi,

As some of you may know, over the last few weeks I have been setting up a complete OCS 2007 R2 deployment at home to get more familiar with how it all hangs together!

Part of that deployment of course includes Enterprise Voice, and realistically, without connecting the system to the PSTN my testing options were rather limited!

At first I tried this by using my Audiocodes MP114 gateway plugged into my home phone line, and whilst this worked fine, I was limited to only one line.

So I decided to consider implementing SIP trunking to an ITSP. Clearly the main issue with that is that OCS requires a SIP over TCP connection rather than the more common SIP over UDP connection.

Therefore I was most pleased when I bumped into Peter Gradwell at the UCExpo at Olympia. We had discussed this options previously and now moved forward.

What follows is an explanation of how I setup OCS to talk to the Gradwell systems being used to pilot connectivity to OCS.

The first steps were for Gradwell to set me up with a few numbers and then to provision me an account on their VPN system so that I could connect to their network. Another option would have been to put a Public IP address on a NIC on my Mediation server, but this is not what Microsoft recommends and also I didn’t have a spare public IP!

So back to the Mediation server, realistically if doing this in production, it would be normal to have a network device connect to the VPN, but given the pilot nature of this system, I setup the VPN on the Mediation server itself.

I configured the VPN to talk to the host IP given by Gradwell and followed their instructions about security which included;

On the options tab click PPP Settings and remove all check boxes

image

On the security tab select advanced and then set the setting as below, allowing optional encryption, enabling PAP (and CHAP and MS-CHAP):

image

Under the networking tab, I selected PPTP VPN and most importantly, on the properties of the IPv4 protocol set it to use my internal DNS server, otherwise the mediation server picks up the DNS settings from the VPN and can’t resolve active directory!

Having established the VPN, I then setup a static route on the Mediation server so that I could ping the host where calls would be directed.

The following command was used to setup the static route

Route Add –P 195.74.61.0 MASK 255.255.255.0 79.xxx.xxx.137

At this point the Mediation server was connected to the VPN and ideally I would have simply pointed the mediation server to the VPN IP address as it’s next hop for calls.

However, as the VPN is not a fixed NIC, this is not possible.

I therefore got an additional IP assigned by Gradwell and routed via the VPN address at their end. This IP address was assigned to the second NIC in the Mediation server using the details below, the key thing being to use a subnet mask of 255.255.255.255

image

This done, there was one final piece of configuration which is most important!

Windows Server 2008 (which is what is on my mediation server) is more secure that server 2003 by default. Therefore traffic is not able to be forwarded between NICs.

To enable this I used the following command.

netsh interface ipv4 set int "2nd NIC name" forwarding=enabled

netsh interface ipv4 set int "vpn name" forwarding=enabled

This allowed traffic to flow from the 2nd NIC in my mediation server across to the VPN adaptor and then out to Gradwell.

At this point, I moved to the OCS R2 Admin console and drilled down to the Mediation server, right clicked and selected properties.

The gateway listening IP address was set to the second NIC mention above and configured to listen on port 5060 as shown below:

image

Then on the “Next hop connections” tab I configured the mediation server to route calls to the Gradwell host required on port 5060 using TCP as shown below.

image

Having saved all the configuration and restarted the mediation services (or just restart the server), then I made sure the VPN was up and that Gradwell had authorised my IP addresses to make calls and tested.

It all works and I can make and receive calls over the SIP trunk!

OCS 2007 R2 Clients Compatibility

Hi,

As you will likely have seen, there are a bunch of different clients from which you can access various features of OCS 2007 R2.

The key ones are as follows:

  • MOC
  • Group Chat
  • Attendant Console

So the question is;

Which OCS 2007 R2 clients can be installed/used on the same machine?

Well it is fairly simple. They can all be installed on the same machines however, MOC (Microsoft Office Communicator) and the Attendant Console can not be running at the same time.

Group Chat is happy to play with either of these to primary OCS clients.

Mail rejection from Sendmail organisation sent via Forefront Security for Exchange

Hi everyone, a colleague of mine had (and solved the issue below) and I thought given the time taken to solve it, that I would share it here…

My colleague had a client who had just done an upgrade from Exchange 2003 to 2007. Mail flow was working except for messages to IBM.

Any mail sent to IBM would get an immediate message rejection. Mails were however able to be accepted from IBM.

The error that was presented was:

The following organization rejected your message: e5.ny.us.ibm.com.
e5.ny.us.ibm.com #550 <xxxxxxxx@us.ibm.com>... cataddr: string too long ##

After a bunch of research my colleague found that ideally some patches should be applied on the sendmail servers that IBM are using. However he called and talked to IBM and all of their servers have the most recent patches. So that was a dead end!

Everything else that you might consider had been checked including having the correct SPF records, being a trustedsource email domain, and not being on any blacklists, etc.

So a while later this is what the solution was:

As part of the upgrade Forefront for Exchange was deployed and if you do, you can enable the below option to provide the MIME headers to be aligned with the RFC compliant headers.

Fix Bare CR or LF in Mime Headers

Specifies whether FSE should fix bare carriage returns and bare line feeds. This corrects a discrepancy between the MIME header parsing method used by Microsoft Outlook® and Outlook Express and the RFC 822 specification on how "bare carriage return (CR)" (0x0d) and "bare line feed (LF)" (0x0a) are handled in MIME headers. Disabled by default. If enabled, it corrects out-of-compliance MIME messages to be compliant with the RFC 2822 specification, meaning that bare carriage returns and bare line feeds are replaced by a "CR-LF" combination. Messages with bare carriage returns or bare line feeds can be parsed differently by different e-mail clients. By design, FSE parses these messages in the same manner as Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express. If this feature is enabled, FSE alters these messages to be compliant with the RFC 2822 specification and, as a result, all e-mail clients will parse them in the same manner. If this feature is disabled, e-mail clients other than Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express may parse messages with bare carriage returns or bare line feeds differently than FSE. Because of this, a virus could avoid detection. To maximize system performance, this feature is disabled by default. If your organization uses e-mail clients that interpret messages with bare carriage returns or bare line feeds differently than Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express, you should enable this feature for maximum security.

It would seem that by default this setting is off and can therefore cause issues with some Sendmail servers. Enabling the above option fixed the problem.

Cheers

Nathan
