    POP3

    Hi guys

I've read Nathens article about POP3 on MSExchange and ran into a problem I hope someone can help with.

Ive enabled a test user to use POP3 and rechecked in powershell and it says Pop enabled = True for that user.

Ive changed the -logintype to PlainTextAuthentication and restarted the pop3 service.

I the EMC under the recieve connectors, the first is Client recieving under port 587. And the second connector is the Default recieving under port 25. There are 2 send connectors; Inboud to AD and AD to Internet which currently goes through a smart host.

Im using Outlook 2003 as the client. In the Outgoing Server setting ive ticked 'My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication'
I've left the server port numbers as default so incoming 110 and Outgoing is 25 and left SSL Unticked.

    When I test the account:
    'Establish network connection' Completes OK
'Find outgoing mail server (SMTP)' Completes OK
'Find incoming mail server (POP3)' Completes OK
    But...
Log onto incoming mail server (POP3) Failed -

It asks for the login details but will not accept it and finally gives the error:
Log onto incoming server (POP3): Outlook could not connect to incoming POP3 mail server because the server did not accept your user name and password??

    Cheers in advance,
    Jay

    Re: POP3

Are you trying to use the Administrator account by any chance? This won't work with POP3, no matter what you try....

If not, can you telnet to the server on port 110 (start, run... telnet server 110) - do you get the banner?

    Re: POP3

    Cheers,

The account is not an Administrator account.

I get the following when I telnet:
+OK Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 POP3 service ready

    Any other Suggestions....

    Thanks.

    Re: POP3

    Ok, try to log on manually. Assuming your user is named Fred, and his password is Password1;

Telnet to port 110 as before. After the banner appears type user fred - then hit enter. You should get an +OK response. Then type pass Password1 - and enter - you should get +OK User successfully logged on response. If you then type LIST and enter you should see all the mails in your mailbox.

Try those things and post back any and all errors. Note, if you don't see what you are typing, turn on local echo in telnet. Also, backspace won't work, so don't type errors - if you do mistype, try again.

    Re: POP3

Hi Jay, sorry so long to reply, I didn't get an email when you posted.

Anyway, looks perfect - and so should work. You aren't checking the 'Require Logon Using Secure Password Authentication' checkbox are you? You don't want to check that.

    Re: POP3

    By the way:

If I use the IP address internal/external of the server for the POP3, it logs in just fine.

Not so sure...what to look for.
