Exchange migration to a new server while maintaining the same server name

This is such a great forum

I have a scenario. Currently running exchange server 2003 on the backup domain controller. We have recently acquired a new server and would like to migrate exchange to the new server while retaining the current server name and IP address. The new server also becomes the backup domain controller. I have never done any migration, just fresh installations.

Any suggestions to help me avoid losing any user logins will be highly appreciated

    Hi,

    Glad you like it!

Well, first question, I guess you are not running NT4 domain controllers so in that case the DC is just another DC.

Realistically the best way to do this, is to setup a new server and promote to domain controller.

Then once AD is working nicely, install Exchange and migrate the mailboxes across. If you are removing the original server then do a quick search for removing first Exchange 2003 server from organisation.

    Cheers

    Nathan
